Are You Looking
For Fresh Ideas In The Training Room?
I found out about a great resource for freelance trainers
last week that has just been developed and launched by Joan
Henshaw, a fellow Twitter Trainer!
Joan began her management training career when she worked as a
middle manager in the Public Sector. In 1993 she was recruited
into a management training consultancy, and in 1995 she became a
freelance trainer. She started to specialise in training
managers in how to motivate their staff to high performance
around 10 years ago, and she has just launched the 10 Minute
Management Toolkit.
I asked Joan to explain a bit more about this resource and how
freelance trainers can use it.
What is the 10 Minute Management Toolkit?
The 10 Minute Management Toolkit is a series of management
training video workshops designed to provide a flexible,
cost-effective, and time-effective way to help managers, team
leaders, supervisors and business owners learn how to motivate
their staff to high performance. Currently in DVD format, each
of the training workshops are broken down into
easily-digestible, bite-sized sessions, around 10 minutes long
which are accompanied by a downloadable workbook.
Why did you develop it?
The idea came from listening to my clients. They were asking for
short, focused training inputs that their managers could access
easily and quickly (and preferably whilst still at their desk!).
Also training budget cuts were leading to the cancellation of
management training courses, and I wanted to help ensure that
managers were not left without the training they needed.
How could freelance trainers use the toolkit?
Firstly as a co-trainer (but one who you will be able to shut up
when you need to!). So, for a change of pace, a change of face,
a different style etc. Using the DVDs would also give you
another way of switching from delivery to facilitation mode, and
here’s where I see potentially one of the biggest benefits of
using them. In my experience, delegates often learn well (and
are engaged by) being able to challenge and critique the
management models being presented to them. But often they are
reluctant to do this for fear of offending the trainer
presenting the models. If I were using the DVDs I would be
specifically inviting delegates to ‘pull apart’ the models as a
way of exploring their practical application and fit to their
business.
On the basis it’s hard to offend a presenter on a DVD my guess
is this would work very well!
Secondly they could be used as an expertise resource. Here’s an
example. You are delivering some training on project management
(your area of expertise).
Maybe there needs to be a short session on what to do when a
team member under-performs. If this is not one of your areas of
expertise you could use ‘How to motivate your staff to improve
their performance with positive criticism’ to cover that session
In short, the DVDs could be used to complement or augment your
current offering to your clients.
