At the recent How To Create a Successful and Profitable Training Business Workshop there was a lot of discussion amongst the delegates about social networking and Twitter in particular. As I’m a big fan of Twitter myself I was actually quite surprised at the amount of cynicism in the room – quite a few people said that it was a waste of time, you could spend all day tweeting and you still wouldn’t get any business from it. I’ve also noticed that there are so many people in my network of freelance trainers who are still not using Twitter. Where are you all?
For those that say it does nothing for their business, I would argue that it depends on how you look at it. If you go to a face to face networking event and get talking to someone, and give them your business card the chances of them ringing you up the next day and saying ‘Hey, come in and run this management development programme for me next week’ are practically nil. It’s just not going to happen. People only do business with you once they know, like and trust you – and that process takes time.
The same principle applies to social networking – it does take time and it does take effort – but one of the main benefits of Twitter is that you can build relationships and get known for what you do far quicker than you could do through off line mediums. Through Twitter I have built up some fantastic relationships with about 20 people (this is different to followers of whch I have 1800 or so). These are people who I have got to know well, I like them,I trust them and we are actively helping and supporting each other in our businesses. And yes, I have got work through Twitter and so have they as I have been able to pass pieces of work to people that I haven’t been able to do myself.
So,you really can’t afford to ignore Twitter or other social networking mediums. They are here to stay. Use them and make them part of your marketing mix.

20|Nov|2009 2Hi Sharon,
Interesting that lots of freelance trainers just don’t get social media.
Those that do realise that although it can be time consuming it’s a far more efficient use of limited time than sending off tons of tenders or replying to ‘opportunities’ or going along to fruitless ‘beauty parades’ hoping to get a sniff of work.
I’ve been amazed at the doors that social media has opened up for me. Tons of joint ventures, bums on seats at training events, a huge amount of free PR…I could go on.
On top of that it’s good fun and a virtual ‘coffee machine chat’
Freelance Trainers…if you’re not involved..you should be.

On top of that it’s fun.

23|Nov|2009 3Twitter works – if you work at it.
So far this year I have generated work running into 5 figures directly through twitter, and built a pipeline for future work.
twitter on its own does not work, but it does when integrated as part of your marketing strategy.
If trainers only have a sales strategy and not a marketing one – and are looking only for short term gains not long term ones then they will see no relevance what so ever – and quite rightly too – but then will they be in business next year.. or the year after?
Equally Twitter and other micro-blogging platforms provide a great learning environment – look at the 900 tweets from the CIPD annual conference alone last week – great free learning.
But those of us that use it must respect that others don’t want to follow our religion and we need to be careful not to act as priests for this new belief system. Those that follow will grow – those that don’t will find their own path

24|Nov|2009 4Sharon,
I was sceptical about twitter, and couldn’t see how it could possibly help my business. To date (I’ve been tweeing for just over 6 months), I haven’t had any DIRECT benefit, but I’ve had lots of INDIRECT benefits. I’ve built up some contacts, and those that have become strong are resulting in real-live meetings wher the ice is already broken, and a mutually supportive relationship. This includes promoting each others businesses on our websites, agreeing to sub-contract to ecah others and getting lots of genuine help and advice. Like you say, it isn’t a quick fix and (if you are not disciplined), you can waste hours just browsing tweets.
I’ve gained two big new clients this year both of which through contacts I made 2 years ago. Business development takes time, no matter how you do it. So maybe I’ll get direct business through twitter in 18 months?

25|Nov|2009 5Hi Sharon,
I have to admit, I was a little sceptical, but……I’m finding it really useful making contacts through Twitter – I just have to make sure I’m disciplined, and not spend all day just following it!!
